The beginning of my adventure in London has been off to a great start. I arrived at the University of Roehampton where we quickly were given our accommodations, oyster card(bus and train) and welcome package.
The University is split into 4 colleges: Digby, Southlands, Froebel and Whitelands. This is similar to Harry Potter in the fact that these colleges are where you live and have a small community of teams where you will represent your college in sporting events such as football or school spirit functions competing within the University. I am staying in Southlands where a majority of the students from the University of Hawai'i are housing as well. Southlands is the smallest of all the colleges which is great because it has been really easy getting to know everyone. We began the first week having orientation meetings to help us become familiar with the campus and also many college social events to meet and talk with other students. The events will start off at the reef and typically end at the union which is the central bar on campus. I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time at the union throughout the semester. Registration was a bit of a headache for a lot of the UHM students. Before the summer began we were told that we would get a follow up of which classes transferred over for the course equivalences from Roehampton to UHM. Unfortunately this never happened because our counselor had to go on emergency leave(I hope she's okay!). This left a lot of students confused and upset when they were registering because they weren't able to get the courses they wanted to transfer over. Luckily I was able to communicate with Shidler the night before and get my classes sorted out and everything worked out for me. My classes are as follows: Mondays MGT 320 Entrepreneurial Opportunity 10am- 1pm HIST 335 Europe in the Early Middle Ages: Anglo-Saxon England 2-4pm Tuesdays BUS367I Business Organisations and Environments in a Global Context 10am-1pm MGT 342 International Business and Emerging Markets 1pm- 4pm Having class only 2 day a week I am hoping to maximize my time traveling and learning about the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. I look forward to meeting many new people from around the world and seeing the world for what it truly is. The more I explore and see the world the more I understand how different parts of the world think and it makes me reflect and see the great opportunity we have to be part of something that is so much bigger than us. I am excited to see what the future has in store for me. "Kids are curious, and if you don't lose that, then everything is an adventure." |
