As I begin to countdown the days before my European adventure I have taken many steps to get ready for this trip of a lifetime. My preparation started at the beginning of the summer by finding the cheapest but best flight possible to London.
I am originally from Seattle, WA and moved to Oahu, HI to finish up my undergrad. I got lucky in this aspect because flights from the mainland to Europe are significantly cheaper than a round trip flight from Hawaii. If you have family somewhere in the mainland I would highly recommend you to stay or visit them for a good chance to travel and also save money on flights. I used google flights to help me find the best deals. This is similar to kayak where they find the cheapest and best route but without the third person party fees. In addition they send you emails when the price of the flights will supposedly increase or decrease. During my last week of living in Hawaii, Hurricane Lane decided to stop by and visit our islands. Lane was projected to be a category 5 and cause catastrophic damage to the island which caused a lot of panic. I had planned to do many of my last minute preparations for my trip such as storing my car and belongings, getting safety check and registration during this week. Unfortunately many stores closed early and were not open so I was left with a lot of unnecessary stress and scrambling to finish up my preparations to leave the island. Thankfully Hurricane Lane died down and became a small tropical storm so I was able to finish off the last of my car and storage preparations. My advice to anyone who is going on a study abroad program is to create a to do list and quickly cross off any items that may take longer to do than expected and start as early as possible. Coming from the mainland I am very used to getting things done at a much faster pace and forgot that everything needs to be shipped to Hawaii so it takes much longer for simple procedures to be finished at times. I have found that reading articles on different travel blogs have helped me to prepare for what kind of clothes to pack as well as what to expect once I arrive in London. Here are a couple different sites I found useful: www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/england-travel-tips/london/ monocle.com/travel/london/ www.st-christophers.co.uk/travel-tips/blogs/2017/the-top-8-london-travel-blogs |
